Vernedia Holcomb Gingery was born on January 23, 1923, to Minnie (Holt) and Noah Holcomb. Her parents, seven brothers – James, Noah, Robert, Jerry, Calvin, George, and David, and four sisters – Jenny, Laura, Annie, and Cynthia, preceded her in death.
She passed peacefully on June 16, 2023, at the age of 100 years.
Affectionately known as Vert, Vernedia Holcomb Gingery was born in Henning, Tennessee, and grew up in Glimp, TN.
In 1946, Vernedia Holcomb married Montell Gingery in Glimp, Tennessee, later moving to Ripley, Tennessee, in 1963. This union lasted 75 years.
Vernedia worked at the Lauderdale County Hospital for twenty-eight years. She began her duties in the laundry department and later became a nurse's aide. In 1972, she became a Licensed Practical Nurse.
Sister Gingery was baptized at New Hope Christian Methodist Church at an early age and later moved her membership to El Canaan Baptist Church, where Reverend Willie L. Reid was the pastor. After moving to Ripley, Sister Gingery united with Miles Chapel Christian Methodist Church, where she served as a stewardess and a kitchen committee member. After the closing of Miles Chapel, she transferred her membership to Holly Grove Baptist Church and served on the Mother's Board. Sister Gingery enjoyed being in service whenever she could. She remained a faithful member until her death.
Vernedia loved spending time with family and friends. In her spare time, she could often be found cooking, canning, fishing, gardening, and traveling.
In her own words, "A few things I want people to know and remember about me are…I love to cook and sew. Sewing is a valuable tool to have. I am patient and soft-spoken. I enjoy helping others, and I love to go fishing."
To cherish her memory, she leaves her daughter, Dorothy (Edward) McKelvy; son, Craig (Emma) Gingery; seven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, twelve great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Please keep the Gingery Family in your thoughts and prayers at this time.
