Walter Chaney, Jr. was born January 20, 1950, to Minnie Pearl Outlaw Chaney and Walter Chaney, Sr., in Lauderdale County, Tennessee. He went to be with the Lord, March 29, 2024, at West Tennessee Healthcare Jackson – Madison County General Hospital in Jackson, Tennessee. Although today’s service is a solemn occasion, he knew and believed that to be absent from the body is to be present with
the Lord according to God’s Holy Word. And for that, we must rejoice! At an early age, Walter professed his belief in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. He united with Elam Baptist Church in 2007 and became a diligent servant of God. In 2013, under the tutelage of Reverend Iran Yarbrough, he became a member of the trustee board an was later ordained a deacon.
Walter attended and graduated from Lauderdale High School in 1969. After which, he began working at Universal Electric Company, which later became Magnetek Universal Electric Company. Due to his God-given ability to think critically and retain what he learned and with a work ethic that was second to none, he was promoted to supervisor and worked in that position for over thirty years. After the plant closed, he was offered and accepted an opportunity to train employees in Juarez, Mexico. He often stated that when in Mexico, he could see how the hand of God had guided his life and blessed him and his family beyond measure. He valued the importance of an honest day’s work and instilled those values in his children. After more than thirty-three years of service, he retired from his day job. However, he kept busy with his love of carpentry and house repairs.
Walter married Lillie Brown. For forty-five years, they were blessed to share their lives together as one. They enjoyed working in the church, raising their children and traveling across the country and beyond. Walter was preceded in death by his mother; father; paternal grandparents, Hamp and Judy Chaney; maternal grandparents, Will and Jennie Lydia Mae Outlaw; and sisters, Joyce Chaney and Mary Margaret Barbee.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Lillie B. Chaney; daughter, Krist Walette Chaney of Memphis, Tennessee; sons, Donald Fitzgerald Stewart of Frisco, Texas; Whaillen Lynn Chaney (Alisa) of Henning, Tennessee; and Keith Darrell Chaney of Ripley, Tennessee; sisters, Betty Jean Lake (William) and Willie Rea Patrick (Olgie) of Ripley, Tennessee; and Lillian Ann Fuqua (Clifton) of Covington, Tennessee; brother -in-law, Jerry Brown of Ripley, Tennessee; sisters-in-law, Theresa Joyner (Pastor Marvin) of Decatur, Illinois, and Bennie Gibbs of Brownsville, Tennessee; eight grandchildren, four great- grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
